{"id":11315,"date":"2018-08-28T08:44:07","date_gmt":"2018-08-28T12:44:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medicarereport.org\/?p=11315"},"modified":"2018-08-28T08:44:07","modified_gmt":"2018-08-28T12:44:07","slug":"critics-trying-to-stop-a-big-study-of-sepsis-say-the-research-puts-patients-at-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicarereport.org\/?p=11315","title":{"rendered":"Critics Trying To Stop A Big Study Of Sepsis Say The Research Puts Patients At Risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(By Richard Harris for NPR)<\/p>\n<p>A consumer advocacy organization is asking federal health officials Tuesday to halt a large medical study being conducted at major universities nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Public Citizen says that the study, involving treatment for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/sepsis\/\">sepsis,<\/a>\u00a0puts patients at risk and will at best produce confusing results.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT03434028?term=NCT03434028&amp;rank=1\">CLOVERS study<\/a>\u00a0seeks to answer a key question about sepsis, which is a common and life-threatening response to infection. Sepsis kills more than 250,000 Americans a year, often by triggering the failure of multiple organs.
