Some patients refuse to answer. Many doctors don\u2019t ask. As the number of Americans with dementia rises, health professionals are grappling with when and how to pose the question: \u201cDo you have guns at home?\u201d<\/p>\n

While gun violence data is scarce, a\u00a0Kaiser Health News investigation\u00a0with PBS NewsHour published in June uncovered over 100 cases across the U.S. since 2012\u00a0 in which people with dementia used guns to kill themselves or others.\u00a0 The shooters often acted during bouts of confusion, paranoia, delusion or aggression \u2014 common symptoms of dementia.\u00a0 Tragically they shot spouses, children and caregivers.
