Prescription painkiller abuse is drawing national attention as states battle increasing abuse cases, presidential candidates offer possible solutions and even President Barack Obama includes the issue in his State of the Union address Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

A new review article<\/a> published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine provides insights for policymakers on how to curb this deadly trend.<\/p>\n

Almost 19,000 people died from overdoses of prescription painkillers \u2014 drugs like morphine and OxyContin \u2014 in 2014, the most recent year for which statistics are available, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>. That same year, about 10,600 died from heroin overdoses \u2014 more than five times the number of fatalities from them in 2000. Read more…<\/a><\/p>\n
