The fine may be bigger than you expect. Here are the details:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is everyone required to have health insurance or pay a fine?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most people who can afford to buy health insurance but don\u2019t do so will face a penalty, sometimes called a \u201cshared responsibility payment.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/what-if-someone-doesnt-have-health-coverage-in-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\">The requirement to have health insurance<\/a>, which began in 2014,\u00a0applies to adults and children alike, but there are exceptions for certain groups of people and those who are experiencing financial hardship.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What kind of insurance satisfies the requirement to have coverage?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most plans that provide comprehensive coverage count as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/uac\/Questions-and-Answers-on-the-Individual-Shared-Responsibility-Provision\" target=\"_blank\">minimum essential coverage<\/a>.\u201d That includes job-based insurance and plans purchased on the individual market, either on or off the exchange.
