But when doctors are reluctant to talk about medical costs, a patient\u2019s health can be undermined. <a href=\"http:\/\/content.healthaffairs.org\/content\/35\/4\/654.abstract\" target=\"_blank\">A study<\/a> published in Monday\u2019s Health Affairs explores the dynamics that can trigger that scenario.<\/p>\n<p>Patients are <a href=\"http:\/\/khn.org\/news\/even-with-skin-in-the-game-health-care-shoppers-are-not-more-savvy\/\" target=\"_blank\">increasingly responsible<\/a> for shouldering more of their own health costs. In theory, that\u2019s supposed to make them sharper consumers and empower them to trim unnecessary health spending. But previous work has shown it often leads them to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w21632?utm_campaign=ntw&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=ntw\" target=\"_blank\">skimp on both<\/a> valuable preventive care and superfluous services alike.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors could play a key role in instead helping patients find appropriate and affordable care by talking to them about their out-of-pocket costs.
