{"id":2937,"date":"2016-05-20T08:33:09","date_gmt":"2016-05-20T12:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medicarereport.org\/?p=2937"},"modified":"2016-05-20T08:33:09","modified_gmt":"2016-05-20T12:33:09","slug":"people-with-hiv-are-less-likely-to-get-cancer-treatment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicarereport.org\/?p=2937","title":{"rendered":"People With HIV Are Less Likely To Get Cancer Treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(By Michelle Andrews for Kaiser Health News)<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve made great progress treating people who are infected with HIV, but if they get cancer they\u2019re less likely to get the care they need, a <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/enhanced\/doi\/10.1002\/cncr.30052\" target=\"_blank\">recent study<\/a> found.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers examined treatment for a variety of cancers, including upper gastrointestinal tract, colorectal, prostate, lung, head and neck, cervix, breast, anal and two blood cancers. With the exception of anal cancer, treatment rates differed significantly between HIV-infected people and those who weren\u2019t infected, according to the study.<\/p>\n<p>For example, 33 percent of patients with HIV and lung cancer failed to receive any treatment for the cancer compared with 14 percent of those who weren\u2019t infected. Similarly, 44 percent of people who were HIV positive didn\u2019t receive treatment for upper GI cancer versus 18 percent of those where weren\u2019t infected with HIV.
