MEMPHIS, Tenn. \u2014 When one of Martha Jane Pierce\u2019s sons peeled back the white sock that had been covering his 82-year-old mother\u2019s right foot for a month, he discovered rotting flesh.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt looked like a piece of black charcoal\u201d and smelled \u201clike death,\u201d her daughter Cindy Hatfield later testified.
