The nation\u2019s opioid\u00a0epidemic\u00a0has been called today\u2019s\u00a0version\u00a0of the 1980s\u00a0AIDS crisis.<\/p>\n

In a speech Monday, President Donald Trump pushed for a tougher federal response, emphasizing a tough-on-crime approach for drug dealers and more funding for treatment. And\u00a0Congress\u00a0is upping the ante, via a series of hearings \u2014 including\u00a0one scheduled to last Wednesday through Thursday\u00a0\u2014 to study\u00a0legislation\u00a0that might tackle the unyielding scourge, which\u00a0has cost an estimated $1 trillion\u00a0in premature deaths, health care costs and lost wages since 2001.
