$1.8 billion in Medicare funds spent on drugs whose clinical benefits have yet to be confirmed

A new study found the U.S. federal government spent an estimated $1.8 billion in Medicare funds in 2019 on drugs whose clinical benefits have yet to be confirmed by the FDA. The researchers used Medicare claims data and found that Medicare’s fee-for-service program spent $1.2 billion on 36 of the 50 these drugs in 2019.
