What is the Medicare Direct Contracting pilot program? First, Medicare is administered either by traditional fee-for-service Medicare or Medicare Advantage. The Direct Contracting pilot program designed by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid is a new way for private companies, some publicly traded healthcare companies, insurers, and private equity-backed start-ups to manage benefits for those individuals enrolled in the fee-for-service program. Supporters say it will reduce the amount of money the government spends on traditional Medicare, while proponents say it will cost the government more, add corporate bureaucracy, and do nothing to improve patient outcomes.
