Medicare Hospital Trust fund will run out of money in 2028
The Medicare program helps pay for health care services for the aged, disabled, and individuals with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It has two separate trust funds, the Hospital Insurance trust fund (HI) and the Supplementary Medical Insurance trust fund (SMI). HI, better known as Medicare Part A, helps pay for inpatient hospital services, hospice care, skilled nursing facility, and home health services following hospital stays. The Hospital Insurance trust fund will run out of money in 2028; however, the program will have enough revenues to cover all operating costs at a reduced rate.
