By cutting out the middlemen, companies are experimenting with new models for health coverage
Walmart, General Motors and other companies are changing the way we pay for health care by cutting out the middlemen. Their approach is contracting directly with health providers to care for employees, in many cases at a flat rate. The approach, called direct contracting represents a distinct break from the status quo, in which health services are mostly arranged by a health insurer on an employer’s behalf.
