OIG found Medicare paid $502 million in excess hospital payments
The Office of Inspector General found 60 hospitals received a surplus in hospital payments totaling $502 million for fiscal years 2011 to 2014 from Medicare for outlier cases because of limits on the reconciliation process that examines the facility’s charges. The OIG is stating if Medicare would have required reconciliation of all hospital costs reports with outlier payments during a cost-report period it would have saved approximately $125 million per year.
