U.S. Court gives Medicare patients a new right to challenge denials of coverage
The U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea delivered a victory to Medicare beneficiaries by giving them a right to challenge denial of benefit decisions that for years have left elderly patients struggle under medical bills. In a class action suit which has lasted nine years, Medicare patients around the country whose benefits were cut when hospital review boards, pressed by federal regulators, made un-appealable decisions that switched their hospitalization status from “admitted” to under “observation”.
