Strengthening the Medicare Trust Fund

The latest Medicare Trustee’s report projected the Hospital Insurance (HI) trust fund to be depleted in 2026; however, with COVID-19 pandemic and increased unemployment; it’s clear that HI Trust Fund will come under additional stress.  Although no formal projections have been made, the Actuaries’ worst-case scenario is calling for an expected exhaustion date closer to 2024.   In blog posted by Health Affairs, the authors have proposed strategy consists of a combination of financial policies accompanied by programmatic changes that rationalize parts of the Medicare program.
