So far this year, Medicare has paid $2.8 billion for COVID-19 hospitalizations

According to updated data from CMS, so far this year, Medicare payments for fee-for-service COVID-19 hospitalizations have totaled $2.8 billion.  The data also shows Medicare paid providers from a low of $5,248 to $70,685, for an average of $25,255 for COVID-19 hospitalizations.  However, according to healthcare consulting firm Avalere, private payers are slated to pay the largest portion of COVID-19 hospitalization costs ranging from $9.6 billion to $16.9 billion in 2020.
