Depression among older adults is common, but not normal

It is estimated that as many as 6.5 million Americans 65 and older suffer from depression according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Although feelings of sadness or “blue” moments are a natural part of aging, depression is not normal at any age.  Because caregivers mistakenly assume depression is a normal part of aging, in many cases, the condition goes undiagnosed and untreated.  When depression goes unrecognized and untreated, there are serious consequences; depression is the single most significant risk factor for suicide in the older adult population.
