Special Supplemental Benefits for the Chronically Ill

In 2019, CMS allowed expanded benefits for Medicare Advantage plans, but so far few providers offer them.  Medicare annual open enrollment season October 15 through December 7 is the time to look into Special Supplemental Benefits for the Chronically Ill, or SSBI.  Although eligibility rules for the new benefits also require an “a high risk of hospitalization or other adverse health outcomes”; these new benefits go beyond medical care and provide support that can help improve and prolong a sick person’s life.  However, few insurers and consumers have been slow to embrace the new rules with only an estimated 4.6 percent of plans are offering any new benefit.  Read article here…
