Medicare Annual Election Period is different from Medigap Open Enrollment Period

Many people are confused with the Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP) and Medigap Open Enrollment Period.  During AEP you can join, change or leave your Part D drug plan or Medicare Advantage; however, it is not the time to enroll or change your Medigap policy.  Beneficiaries have a one-time, six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, starting with your Medicare Part B effective date during which you can enroll in a Medigap plan with no health questions asked; after that, insures may turn down your application, charge you more on the basis of illness you’ve had in the past, or exclude coverage for some preexisting conditions for several months.
