Does Medicare cover transplants?

According to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) almost 40,000 organ transplants took place in the United States in 2019.  Does Medicare cover these vital procedures? Yes, if it medically necessary. Not only does Medicare cover transplants and other medically necessary health services, but they cover the costs for both the person receiving a transplant and the person donating their organ, if they are alive.
