Lack of Oversight and Opportunities for Fraud Appear to be Driving Upswing in COVID-19 Testing Costs

Medicare spending on COVID-19 testing in 2022 outpaced 2020 and is expected to exceed 2021 spending as well, even though “the pandemic is over” according to President Biden. This analysis is based on reports and projections from CareSet, a research organization that works to make the health care system more transparent. Sources at the HHS Inspector General’s office expressed concern that a “chaotic approach” to managing and reporting testing costs early in the pandemic led to “price-gougers, fraudsters and people with no experience in the laboratory business” climbing on the opportunities available, and the OIG is continuing to investigate suspected fraud situations.
