Do All the Hospital’s Doctors Accept Your Insurance? If Not, You May Get the Bill.
A young athlete is hurt during a sporting event and is taken to nearby in-network hospital for emergency surgery; the family thinks all the doctors that work at the hospital are also in-network until the bills started arriving requiring the family to pay thousands of dollars more.
That is what happened to a family in California whose coverage is purchased ($1,000 a month for himself and his family) through the Covered California, the state’s Obamacare exchange. The two surgeons submitted a bill for $6,200 (was not covered by the insurer) and the anesthesiologist submitted a bill for $3,100 (the insurer only covered one-third) were out-of-network allowing the physicians to bill the full amount to the patient.
A bill (AB533) has been approved by the California Assembly and Senate committees that would allow patients to pay only in-network rates at an in-network facility, regardless of the insurance status of individual doctors. Read the article…..
