It’s Alive!

In this week’s issue of the journal Science, a team of genome scientist created a single-celled organism that has 473 genes which they believe is close to the minimum number of genes necessary to sustain its life.  For the record, we humans each have about 20,000 genes.

This is the first step in a larger, two-pronged scheme: to understand what genes are essential for life and eventually to design what could be a process of mass production. In other words armies of cells that could spit out pretty much any molecule that’s desired.  Read article here…….
