Billing for Remote Patient Monitoring in Medicare
In 2024, Medicare paid $536 million for remote patient monitoring, a 31 percent increase from 2023. Remote patient monitoring (RPM) is a technology that allows healthcare providers to collect and analyze patient health data from a distance, typically in the patient’s home. Providers review the data, provide feedback to the patient, and make treatment decisions as needed. RPM continues to show an upward trend. The Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General (OIG), found that the use of these services in Medicare has the potential to be significantly expanded; however, it noted that additional oversight is necessary.
