A recent CMS announcement means providers in a bundled payments test program will need to coordinate care well to receive payments for delivering savings and higher quality, or risk a penalty, an attorney told me Aug. 14. On Aug. 13, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced that additional providers have joined a Medicare bundled payments pilot program that aims to improve care and cut costs. Over 2,100 acute care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, physician group practices, long-term care hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation facilities and home health agencies are now in the risk-bearing implementation period of the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement initiative.
