Over-the-counter Hearing Aids Inch Closer Via H.R. 1652

An over-the-counter marketplace for hearing aids for people with mild-to-moderate hearing loss was the subject of debate at a meeting yesterday of the House Energy & Commerce Health Subcommittee. Designed to facilitate corrective action by the portion of Americans with hearing loss who currently do not have aids, the bill encountered resistance from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), the trade group for speech-language pathologists and audiologists, who argue that the marketplace should be made available to only those suffering mild hearing loss.
