The recent announcement by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) that it will reimburse health care professionals for voluntary advance care planning starting January 1, 2016 means that professionals who treat Medicare patients will be able to dedicate time to a process of planning for end-of-life decision-making with patients, and often with surrogate decision-makers.
