What is a Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice?

For those with Original Medicare there is an important Medicare rule called Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice (MOON) you should be aware of.  According to the “Medicare and You” handbook, “Staying overnight in a hospital doesn’t always mean you are an inpatient…you or a family member should always ask if you’re an inpatient or an outpatient each day during your hospital stay, since it affects what you pay.” In Toni King’s column, she answers a reader’s question on why he had to sign the MOON form and how it affects not only what you pay but whether you’ll qualify for Part A coverage.
