Medicare posts a $5.8 billion loss in 2019

The new Medicare Trustees Report shows that Medicare posts a $5.8 billion loss in 2019 on $323 billion in revenue.  Payroll taxes, the program’s main source of revenue, rose 6.3 percent to $285 billion; however, low interest income and other investment income drop from $9.8 billion to $9 billion. Although most Americans qualify for free Medicare Part A, but some Americans have to pay premiums for Medicare Part coverage.  The Medicare Part A premium revenue increased 7.5 percent between 2018 and 2019, to $3.9 billion.
