Audit Trails for Ambulance Billings Difficult to Track

The Department of Health and Human Services’ inspector general’s office casts some doubt on the validity of roughly $30 million in billings for ambulance transports in the first half of 2012, according to comments made in a recent audit. With 20% of ambulance companies nationwide having questionable billings, and with some geographic areas identified as fraud-prone, Medicare has been prodded to exercise legal authority for documentation requirements prior to the processing of claims.
