Medicare’s Three-Day Rule: What you need to know
Those individuals who need continued care at a skilled nursing facility after being discharged from the hospital may be in for a shock to find out their stay will not be covered by Medicare. Why? Something called Medicare’s three-day rule. This rule states Medicare Part A will cover care at a skilled nursing facility only if the individual is admitted as an inpatient in the hospital for three consecutive days. Those individuals in the hospital who are under observation status, are considered to be outpatient. Medicare Part B covers outpatient services.
